SEO vs. Social Media: Which One Does Your Business Really Need?
When I first started learning digital marketing, I kept coming across a common question: Should a business focus on SEO or social media?
At that stage, I thought there must be one better option.
As I learned more and started building my own website, my understanding changed. SEO and social media are useful for different reasons. One helps people discover information through search, while the other helps businesses communicate with people through social platforms.
So, instead of asking which one is better, I started asking a different question:
How can SEO and social media work together to support a business website?
As a fresher digital marketer, I am still learning through practice. Building my own website has helped me understand that digital marketing is not about working on one channel in isolation. The website, SEO, content, and social media can all support each other.
Here is what I have learned from my experience so far.
SEO Starts With the Website
SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, became more meaningful to me when I started working on my own website.
Before that, I mostly understood SEO as using keywords to help a website rank.
After working on website content and structure, I realised there is much more to it.
SEO can involve:
- Keyword research
- Understanding search intent
- Creating useful content
- Improving page structure
- Internal linking
- Technical SEO
- Website performance
- Mobile-friendly design
This made me realise that SEO should not be treated as something added to a website at the very end.
It should be considered while planning the website, creating pages, writing articles, and organising information.
Google’s current Search Central resources also provide guidance on Search Essentials, Search Console, and its SEO Starter Guide for website owners.
Social Media Gives Me Another Way to Reach People
Social media feels different from search.
With SEO, I am thinking about what people may search for and how my website can provide a useful answer.
With social media, I can actively share information with people through content.
For example, I can share:
- SEO tips
- Website-building lessons
- Digital marketing ideas
- Project updates
- Content creation tips
- Personal learning experiences
- Industry observations
I also get an opportunity to communicate directly.
Someone can comment on a post, ask a question, share an opinion, or visit my profile.
For my own digital marketing journey, this makes social media useful because it allows me to show what I am learning instead of keeping everything inside my website.
SEO and Social Media Solve Different Problems
One of the biggest things I have learned is that SEO and social media should not be treated as if they perform the same job.
SEO is connected strongly with search visibility.
Social media is connected more with content distribution, communication, and audience interaction.
For example, imagine a small business that sells handmade products.
A potential customer might search for:
“handmade gifts in Mumbai.”
The business could create useful website content around relevant searches and optimise its pages properly.
At the same time, the business could use Instagram to show products, share customer experiences, post ideas, and communicate with followers.
The two channels can support different stages of how someone discovers and learns about the business.
Building My Website Changed My Perspective
This is where my own website became important.
When I started building mohamedzahal.com, I began thinking more carefully about how different parts of digital marketing connect.
My website gives me a place to present my skills, services, articles, projects, and learning journey.
Social media can help people discover that information.
For example, I can write a detailed article about SEO on my website and then create a short LinkedIn post based on one idea from that article.
Someone who finds the social media post useful can then visit my website for the complete information.
For me, the connection looks simple:
Social Media → Website → Useful Information → Trust → Action
That is one of the biggest things website building has taught me.
Should a Business Choose SEO or Social Media?
From what I have learned so far, I would not make this decision without first understanding the business.
Every business has different goals.
If a business wants to improve its visibility when people search for specific products, services, or questions, SEO may need strong attention.
If the business depends more on visual content, community interaction, regular communication, or audience engagement, social media may have an important role.
Some businesses may need both.
That is why I think the first question should not be:
“SEO or social media?”
Instead, ask:
“What does my business need from digital marketing?”
Once the goal is clear, it becomes easier to decide where to put time and effort.
SEO Has a Strong Connection With Long-Term Website Content
One thing I like about SEO is its connection with website content.
When I create an article that answers a real question, that article becomes part of my website’s content library.
It can continue to provide useful information to people who find it through search.
However, I have also learned not to think of SEO as a quick solution.
Good SEO requires useful content, a well-organised website, relevant optimisation, and regular improvement.
The website experience also matters. Google’s current page-experience guidance recommends looking at factors such as Core Web Vitals, security, mobile display, and overall usability rather than focusing on just one ranking factor.
This helped me understand that SEO is not simply about placing keywords on a page.
The page should also be useful for the person reading it.
Social Media Can Give Website Content More Life
I also see social media as a way to extend the reach of content I create for my website.
Suppose I publish an article called:
“How to Improve Your Website SEO.”
I can take one point from that article and create a LinkedIn post.
I can turn another point into an Instagram post.
I can create a short checklist from the same article.
I can even share a personal lesson I learned while working on the topic.
This means one useful website article can lead to several pieces of social media content.
For me, this makes content planning easier and creates a stronger connection between my website and social media.
I See the Website as the Centre
The more I work on my website, the more I see it as a central part of my digital marketing presence.
Social media platforms can change over time.
Their features, algorithms, formats, and audience behaviour can change.
My website gives me a space where I can organise my professional information in my own way.
That does not make social media less important.
Instead, I see the two working together.
Social media can help people discover my content.
SEO can help people find my website through relevant searches.
The website can then provide more detailed information.
This approach makes more sense to me than treating each channel as a completely separate activity.
What I Would Do First
If I were starting digital marketing for a business, I would keep the process simple.
1. Understand the Business
First, I would understand the product or service, target audience, goals, and main problems the business wants to solve.
2. Build a Clear Website
The website should clearly explain what the business offers and make it easy for visitors to find important information.
3. Create Useful Content
I would focus on questions, problems, and topics that are genuinely relevant to the audience.
4. Improve SEO
I would work on areas such as search intent, keywords, content, website structure, internal links, and technical improvements.
5. Use Social Media
I would choose suitable platforms and create content that helps people discover and understand the business.
6. Connect Everything
I would use social media to support website content and use the website as a place for more detailed information.
7. Review the Results
I would look at relevant website and social media data to understand what is getting attention and where improvements may be needed.
This feels more practical to me than trying to choose one channel and ignore the other.
What My Website Taught Me
Building my own website has changed how I understand digital marketing.
SEO has taught me to think about how people search.
Social media has taught me to think about how people discover and interact with content.
Website building has taught me to think about what happens after someone reaches the website.
These three areas are connected.
A person may discover a post on social media, visit a website, read an article, learn about a service, and eventually become interested in the business.
The journey can be different for every person, but the important lesson for me is that digital marketing works better when the different parts have a clear connection.
My Experience So Far
As a fresher digital marketer, I am still developing my skills.
I do not see my current approach as a final formula. I am learning through website building, content creation, SEO practice, social media, and regular research.
Some things become clearer only when I actually work on them.
That is what happened with SEO and social media.
Instead of seeing them as competitors, I now see them as two different tools that can support the same digital marketing goal.
My website has helped me understand that connection in a much more practical way.
Conclusion
So, SEO vs. Social Media: which one is better for a business?
From my point of view, there is no single answer for every business.
SEO can help people discover useful website content through search. Social media can help businesses communicate, share content, and build connections with their audience.
A well-planned website can bring these activities together.
For me, the better approach is to start with the business goal, understand the audience, build a useful website, create valuable content, work on SEO, and use social media to share and support that content.
I am still learning and improving my own digital marketing approach, but building my website has helped me understand these connections more clearly.
